Institute of Human Development and Training (IHDT) ,Sri Lanka Foundation
Institute (SLFI), Oxfam America, Disaster Management Centre and have started
an action research on Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) with
the intention of supporting the policy development, initiate risk reduction
methodologies and establish a network among all stake holders in the
district.
The Research on disaster risk reduction aims to fill the knowledge gap by
identifying and implementing community driven hazard specific disaster
mitigation and preparedness models using community participation. Final out
come of this research will be strengthen the community on DRR by setting up
model disaster resilience centers and establishing a Resource Center.

General Objective
The overall objective is to identify and develop hazard specific disaster
risk reduction models in consultation with community and participation to
strengthen the communities at risk due to disasters by adding to and
improving the existing knowledge and capabilities on DRR.
Specific Objectives:
• To study the existing community knowledge in selected localities on
hazards and disasters, disaster mitigation, early warning and preparedness
(in DRR).
• Develop effective hazard specific disaster risk reduction models that
could be replicated in different communities
• Implement the DRR models in vulnerable locations.
• Disseminate research findings and learning process locally, nationally and
internationally
• Establish a Resource Center for collection and wider usage of disaster
management related resources
